Dennis Adeniran’s stunning long shot helped Sheffield Wednesday knock out Championship Sunderland in the first round of the Carabao Cup.
After an uneventful 15-minute start, the League One side took the lead with Adeniran’s superb 25-yard strike.
Adeniran then claimed an assist when he intercepted a poor pass from behind from Black Cats goaltender Alex Bass and swept from 12 yards around substitute Shirasou.
The visitors, who made 11 changes, posed little threat as their 18-game unbeaten run came to an end.
Sunderland’s exit means 12 teams in the Championship have lost to lower league opponents in the first round of competition this season.
There are now eight second-place teams qualified for the second round of the EFL Cup, four fewer than the previous record low of 12.
Sheffield Wednesday made eight changes from Saturday’s 1-0 win over MK Dons, which allowed them to avenge their loss to the Black Cats in the League One play-offs last season.
Sheffield Wednesday boss Darren Moore told BBC Radio Sheffield:
“It was really great for me to announce the change and see the players who came there play like that. We played against good opponents.
“I think the players got stronger as the game went on. I think we started to dominate the game in and out of possession.
“The players are competing to play every week and that’s what we want here.”
Sunderland manager Alex Neal told BBC Newcastle:
“It’s disappointing that we were, to some extent, the makers of our own downfall. I don’t really think we fell apart only when we made a mistake in the first goal.
”I thought I controlled the ball without being threatening.
“We have Jack Diamond, a wide player who plays at centre-forward, and Harrison Sanders, a midfielder who plays at left wing-back.
“But from the physical effort we made in the previous two league games, I felt that I didn’t want to expose myself to the other players who were featured tonight. It will be a real burden for
