Norwich City 2-1 Huddersfield Town: Canaries first win of the season

Danell Siani played for Huddersfield Town on loan last season

Goals from Josh Sargent and Danel Sinani paid off for Dean Smith’s attacking change to give Norwich their first win of the season against 10-man Huddersfield.

The Canaries boss brought a pair of forwards into the lineup with Teemu Pukki out with a foot injury.

Two goals from the first 17 minutes were enough to see off a poor Terrier side that sent off Tom Rees in the second half.

Norwich held on to victory despite a consolatory second-half goal from Huddersfield teenager Patrick Jones.

With Finnish international Pukki out, American Sergeant and Luxembourg forward Siani stepped up to tie the two together in style.

Early on, Sinani faced his former club, crossing from the right and Sargent showing physical and aerial skill to fend off Lee Nichols in Huddersfield’s goal.

Three minutes into the second half, Tom Rees was sent off for fouling Josh Sargent.

Sargent was able to quickly set up his teammate. After skipping Nicholls’ round, the ball fell to his Sinani, who coolly doubled the lead for the Canaries to his.

They then linked up again for what seemed to be the defining moment, with Sinani setting up Sargent in the middle before being taken down by Terrier defender Leeds, who was the last man.

But Wales’ U-21 international Jones’ superb individual goal put the home crowd in a tense final ten minutes.

Neither team was able to convert good chances in the final stages, and Dean Smith’s team retained their first league win since relegation from the Premier League.

Norwich City boss Dean Smith told BBC Radio Norfolk:

“It feels really good to win, but it was also a really good performance. The red card killed the game. became.

“We controlled the game really well and got our first win to build on.

“The first two goals deserved what we played. We should have scored more, but tonight there was a real injection of energy from Sargent and Siani.

“Teemu Pukki’s legs were too fat to wear boots. His x-rays are back fine and I hope he’s ready for Friday’s game against Millwall.”

Huddersfield boss Danny Schofield told BBC Radio Leeds:

“The effort and application of the players was great.

“We always had a game plan and it was always difficult coming to Norwich, but it’s difficult when you concede an early goal.”

”We were comfortable coming on in the second half, but Tom Rees was sent off early, which made it difficult.

“The big positive is that the players are fighting for themselves, fighting for the club, fighting for me and my staff. If we keep doing that, we’ll be fine.”
