Jason Roy’s struggle continues on The Hundred

Kevin Petersen has urged England to back ‘best player’ Jason Roy in whiteball cricket as opener Jason Roy is ill.

Roy has been one of England’s most dependable and exciting players in recent years and was instrumental in winning the 2019 World Cup, but has struggled this summer.

Roy scored just 197 runs and 50 nil in 11 games for England. On the other hand, he started his 100 campaign at the Oval in his Invincibles and scored just his 10 runs against his Fire at Welsh following a Duck on the first ball.

Before Roy’s cheap dismissal on Sunday, Petersen said sky sports Roy is England’s ‘best player’ and should especially ensure that the T20 World Cup takes place in October.

Oval Invincibles captain Sam Billings says it's only a matter of time before Roy makes a move after struggling to score again in the season opener.

“Jason just turned 32,” Petersen said. “What disgusts me in this country is that journalists write people down at such a young age.

“Jason Roy is a World Cup winner. He did an incredible job for Eoin Morgan. He was told by Morgan to go out and hit that ball. Hitting the ball and being a risk taker will make you fail, and once you start failing, failure can last for a long time.

“If Robkey [managing director of England cricket] He who hears this is your best player and has been your best player for many years.

“I think what they have to say and this is really what’s going on behind the scenes. Back up the best players.”

Before the World Cup in Australia, England faced Pakistan in seven T20 matches, and Petersen believes Roy will rediscover his form in that series.

“Leave Roy now,” he added. “Give Roy another chance to find his form through T20, through The Hundred.

“Stay behind him! They did it with Zach Crowley in the test match. Ben Stokes was adamant that Crowley will play the rest of the season. I need to do that with Roy.”

Oval Invincibles captain Sam Billings also helped Roy, who was sent off for just 10 runs after being caught in a short fine leg against the Welsh Fires.

“He’s a world-class player,” Billings said. “We’ve seen him dominate offense for a long time.

“It’s only a matter of time before he gets going. Today he’s middle from straights to fine legs.

“That’s going to change. He’s too good to turn around. We kept him playing positive and got off to a great start.”
