SANTA CLARA, Calif., Aug. 12, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Applied Materials today announced that Dr. Om Kalam (Om) Nalamasu, Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer, received the 2023 IEEE Frederick Phillips Award. announced that The award honors outstanding achievements in managing research and development resulting in effective innovation in the electrical and electronics industry. Dr. Nalamasu received the award for leadership in research and development of semiconductor materials, processes and devices.

Dr. Nalamasu is a world-renowned expert in materials science and has made significant contributions to the fields of optical lithography and polymeric materials science and technology. He has had a distinguished leadership career in advancing materials engineering technologies and solutions for semiconductors and displays, enabling global change in new markets adjacent to the wafer fabrication equipment industry.

As an advocate of open innovation and a pioneer of value-added partnerships, Dr. Naramus has built a world-class team to extend Applied Materials’ leadership in materials engineering. His longstanding strategic relationships with academia, research institutes, customers, supply chain partners, and government agencies around the world include the Materials Engineering Technology Accelerator (META) Center in New York, Computational Center for Nanotechnology Innovation. (CCNI at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI)) and the New Jersey Nanotechnology Consortium (NJNC) at Bell Labs are among the first US nanotechnology public-private partnerships.

He is also President of Applied Ventures, LLC, the venture capital fund of Applied Materials, with expertise in semiconductors, displays, AI, big data, Industry 4.0, energy efficiency, 5G, electric vehicles, and life sciences.

Prior to joining Applied Materials in 2006, he was a NYSTAR Distinguished Professor of Materials Science and Engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Vice President of Research. Early in his career, he held key R&D leadership positions at his AT&T Bell Labs, Bell Labs/Lucent Technologies, and Agere Systems, Inc., and worked in Bell Labs’ Nanofabrication Labs, MEMS and Electronics. He served as Director of Wave Tube Research and Condensed Matter Physics. organization.

Dr. Nalamasu has received numerous awards, has authored over 180 papers, review articles and books, and holds over 120 worldwide issued patents. In 2017, Dr. Nalamasu was elected to the US National Academy of Engineering for his innovations spanning commercialization in materials development, atom-controlled thin film fabrication, microelectronics and energy generation and storage. He has received numerous awards nationally and internationally, is an IEEE Fellow, and in Silicon Valley he is a board member of The Tech Interactive and a member of several prominent advisory boards. He got his Ph.D. He graduated from the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada.
