DALTON — Greg and Lisa Rose have been running small businesses for 33 years. Elizabeth Heller’s small business is just getting started.

Their businesses are in different locations, but their needs are similar. Both need access to information about resources within the community in order to function effectively.

Roses and Heller were among more than 200 attendees at the inaugural Berkshire Business Resource Expo on Tuesday at the Stationery Factory. Held by five Berkshire-based business organizations, the five-hour event was attended by nearly 60 exhibitors and included his three panel discussions on small business-related topics.

In addition to gathering information about available resources, the expo also allowed small business owners to network and interact. This is a rare activity since the COVID-19 pandemic has isolated many small businesses.

“Being an entrepreneur can be lonely,” said Heller, a Pittsfield resident and recent graduate of All Berkshire County’s Entrepreneurship.

“You can meet the community and let them know what you’re doing,” said Heller, who runs his own company and recently self-published his book. “You look around and you’re like, ‘Wow, here’s all the help.'”

The Roses operates Rennie & Rose of Dalton, which designs fabrics for upholstery products. Their customers include museums and boutiques.

“Small businesses have a lot of stuff they don’t usually have in-house, like accounting, legal, HR,” she said. “In a large company these may be separate departments, but in a small business you have to cover it all, so connecting with the people around you and those who are best at other functions is so important.
