Business education at Ivy League institutions has been defined primarily by face-to-face courses and strong networks. These two factors don’t necessarily translate into an online experience. Peggy Bishop Lane, Vice Chancellor of the Wharton MBA Executive Program, said: luck. “Many of our faculty are engaged and energized by online teaching. They see this as a promise for the future.”
Launching in May 2023, the executive MBA program aims to have a global cohort of business professionals from Asia, North America, Latin America and Europe. Wharton started his Executive MBA program at his Philadelphia flagship store in 1975 and his San Francisco cohort in 2002. You don’t have to travel every other week, Lane says.
“Our experience delivering courses online to students during the pandemic has given us confidence that we can provide the best education in this format,” she says. “We believe this will give students the flexibility they want, while also creating the close-knit community that we are known for.”
How the program works and how to apply
The Wharton for Executives Hybrid Program takes 22 months to complete. As with the Philadelphia and San Francisco programs, the Global Cohort student also attends his one-week residency orientation in Philadelphia. There are also five more residency weeks for online students hosted in Philadelphia, San Francisco, or other locations around the world.
“We also know from current students how important their close bonds are and how important face-to-face interactions are in forming and solidifying those bonds,” Lane said. “That’s why we included a series of residency weeks in our new global cohort.”
As the target student demographic for this program is busy executives with external engagements and interests, the online course will be synchronous (live) and held every other week on Thursday evenings and Friday and Saturday mornings. she adds.
“The evolution of the Wharton Executive MBA is a reflection of our entrepreneurial spirit and dedication to innovation in education,” Wharton Dean Erica James said in a statement announcing the program. “The past two and a half years have proven that her high-quality academic program scales well beyond the traditional face-to-face classroom experience.”
