match preview
The reasons behind the Warrington Wolves’ miserable Betfred Super League campaign remain a mystery and are unlikely to become clearer after Friday’s difficult trip to the Wigan Warriors.
The Wolves are one of the biggest spenders in the tournament, but they are off the pace in 10th place.
Instead of gearing up for the playoffs, they’re looking over their shoulders at the bottom two sides, which have just a four-point gap to Toulouse below.
It’s a surprising situation for Warrington, and it could get worse by the time this round of play is over.
Wyer have won just seven of their 21 league games this season and have scored points against Wigan side.
The Warriors are 46 ahead of Hull KR last week and have plundered 146 in their last three home matches.
Winger Bevan French was front and center with 15 tries in July and it’s unclear whether the Wolves will be able to stop them despite their impressive record against Wigan in recent weeks.
Daryl Powell’s men have won three of their last four meetings, including the last two trips to DW Stadium.
Wigan won 40-22 in their last meeting in the 11th round and can’t see anything but a home win.
The 1-3 odds on that outcome are off, but 20-21 on the home side covering an 8-point handicap looks like a decent bet.
The Huddersfield Giants are also strong at home. Hometown John Smith has won 9 of his 10 games at his stadium this season and will have to back up to face Hull FC on Friday.
The Giants worked hard to beat Warrington 32-22 last Saturday, and they were able to get a similar workout this week.
Hull stumbled upon Toulouse last Friday to stave off a recent slump, but it’s a big step up in class and the priority is for the home team.
The last six meetings have featured winning margins of 8, 8, 14, 7, 12, 2, with FC often better than that, but Huddersfield look strong at the moment, 1-12. It looks like it’s worth helping to win at the point.
